Seven Counties Services Offers Tips to Help You Stay Substance-Free During Pregnancy
Pregnancy can bring a lot of changes, and staying away from alcohol or other substances may not always be easy. If you are struggling, you are not alone, and asking for support or looking into resources is a sign of strength.
Using alcohol or other substances during pregnancy can affect both you and your baby. It may lead to health, learning, development, or behavior problems for your baby. The good news is that support is available, and every healthy choice you make matters.
Here are a few tips that may help you:
1. Remember Your Reason Why
Think about what matters the most to you, whether it’s your health, your baby’s health, or the future that you want to build together. Remembering your “why” can help you stay motivated when things feel difficult.
Tip: Write down your top three reasons for staying substance-free and keep them somewhere you can see them when you need a little extra encouragement.
2. Know Your Triggers
Certain people, places, feelings, or situations may make you want to use alcohol or other substances. Learning what your triggers are can help you prepare for them.
Tip: Plan before parties, stressful days, or other situations that may be difficult for you. Remember, it’s okay to leave a situation or not attend one that doesn’t feel right for you.
3. Build Your Support Team
Making a change to stay substance-free is no easy task, and you don’t have to do this by yourself! Having people you trust by your side can make a big difference.
Tip: Share your goal with your partner, trusted friends, family members, or healthcare provider, so you have a group of supporters cheering you on. Let them know what you need, even if it is simply to listen.
4. Make a Plan for Cravings
Cravings can be difficult but remember they will pass. Having a plan will help you get through those difficult moments.
Tip: When a craving happens, take a moment to pause. Try drinking a glass of water, eating a protein-rich snack, taking a short walk, calling or texting someone you trust, or simply doing something that helps you feel calm. Most importantly, be patient and kind to yourself.
A Positive Reminder
“I am making healthy choices for myself and my baby. I am stronger than this moment. I deserve support, and I do not have to do this alone. Every positive step I take matters.”
