Festival commemorates BIPOC Mental Health Month

Join us from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m., Saturday, July 18, for “Winners for Wellness” at the California Community Center, 1600 Catherine St., Louisville. The “Winners for Wellness” festival at The California Community Center is a vibrant celebration of mental health and community spirit you won’t want to miss! Designed with BIPOC families in mind, this event packs a punch with tons of freebies and fun! There’s music, games, and even workshops where you can learn cool things about caring for your mind. Everyone’s invited to join in, make new friends, and have a great time celebrating wellness and community.

Along with free food, music, games, giveaways, community resources, and youth activities, you won’t want to miss these LearningZone sessions:

The Feeling of Presence: Somatics with Z!
Noon – 1 p.m.

Participate in this interactive workshop that will involve guided meditations, self-reflection, and activities with others in the session. You’ll leave feeling more in touch with the sensations and emotions in your body, mind and spirit.


Z! Haukeness (They/Them), a somatics practitioner, has been a participant of group or 1-on-1 somatic spaces for the past 10 years.

QPR Suicide Prevention Training (Question, Persuade, Refer)
1– 2:30 p.m.

During this session, participants will learn how to recognize the warning signs of suicide, increase awareness of stigma, understand suicide as a public health issue, know how to offer hope, know how to access local and national referral sources, and know how to save a life.

Lakeisha Gardner, health program analyst/suicide prevention coordinator, Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness, is a certified QPR Gatekeeper Instructor.

Know Your Rights and Local Protections in Louisville
 2:30 – 3 p.m.

Learn how local and federal laws protect you from discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations. The Louisville Metro Human Relations Commission will explain your rights, answer questions, and share resources available to our community.

Chair Yoga with ALI YOGA WELLNESS
3 – 4 p.m.

Participants will blend therapeutic breathing, movement and meditation to experience stress relief and forge a pathway to mental clarity.

Karen McKnight, founder of ALI Yoga, will lead the session.

Felt, Stitch, & Sew with Healing Herbs
Throughout the day

Participants will enjoy time with Aflorar Herb Collective, a loving collective of herbalists and growers using art and healing in our political movements for community care.

 T Benicio Gonzales, an experienced activist and organizer who focuses on racial justice, immigrants’ rights, and queer liberation. Outside of work as the deputy director of the ACLU of Kentucky, you can find T sewing and crafting.

Pump up the Volume with DJ Deuce

All day long, DJ Deuce, disc jockey and co-owner of 2 Be Continued Productions, will play great music and keep the energy going!
