Back to School, Back to Support: Seven Counties Services Helps Students Thrive

August is National Back to School Month

While smart boards and computer tablets have long since replaced chalkboards and erasers, back to school is still a whirlwind of activity. Backpacks are full, schedules are set, and parents are deluged with countless forms to complete and dates to remember.

Somewhere in the middle of this annual chaos are children. Some thrive in the “newness” and love to share stories with their friends about their summer break. For others, the school year starts with the need for strong emotional well-being, resilience, and access to the right support systems.

The Seven Counties Services School-Based Services Program is a needed mental health resource that is part of any educator’s successful lesson plan. Here’s why it matters:

• Nearly 1 in 4 Kentucky children (24.9%) has been diagnosed with a mental health or behavioral condition such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD Explore Mental Health Conditions.
• In 2023, about 25.4% of Kentucky students reported their mental health was “not” good most of the time.
• 25% of Kentucky students were chronically absent during the 2024–2025 school year.

These numbers highlight what parents and educators already see every day: students are carrying more stress, anxiety, and emotional challenges than ever before.

Why Mental Health Support Matters in the Classroom

Back-to-school season can bring excitement, but it can also bring anxiety, stress, and uncertainty. Students may be adjusting to new schools or classrooms, social pressures or bullying concerns, academic expectations, and family or personal challenges. Without support, these stressors can lead to difficulty concentrating, behavioral challenges, increased absenteeism, and lower academic performance.

Our School-Based Services Team partners with local schools to provide accessible, on-site mental health care for students right where they spend most of their day. Services include individual, family and group counseling, behavioral health assessments, crisis support and intervention, collaboration with school staff and families as well as connection to additional community resources.

By bringing care directly into schools, students can get the help they need quickly, consistently, and without added barriers. Students who feel supported show stronger academic performance, healthier coping, and problem-solving skills, and have better relationships with friends and teachers.

For educators, the Seven Counties Services School-Based Services Team members are trusted collaborators who help address student needs. These specially trained professionals offer tools and strategies for classroom success and provide support to help manage complex behavioral challenges. At Seven Counties Services, we believe every student deserves the opportunity to succeed—academically, socially, and emotionally.
