IHOPE: Identifying and Treating First Episode Psychosis
Psychosis is a condition where a person’s thoughts, feelings, and perceptions become confused. People experiencing a first episode of psychosis might have trouble telling what’s true and what’s not. Because this experience can be scary and confusing, it’s important to identify signs and implement treatment as early as possible.
Symptoms of Psychosis
Someone experiencing first episode psychosis may experience some or none of the following signs:
- Sudden irrational behaviors
- Aggression against self-and/or others
- Difficulties communicating
- Difficulty relating to others
- Conflict with authority figures
- Difficulties with social, academic, and self-care skills when there were previously none

“I had problems with handling social situations, seeing, and hearing things. Now I can interact with peers better, enjoy work, and I know how to better handle stress that comes my way. It’s been several months since I have heard or seen anything. Life is better, and I’ve even been accepted into a nursing program.”
“When I started the IHOPE program, I was unable to work, paranoid, and had periods where I couldn’t tell you or remember what I was doing. But now, I have been able to obtain my certification in a field of trade that I enjoy and join the workforce. I’ve been working full time for six months now and recently purchased my first car. I’m better able to use my coping skills and have continued to experience my symptoms less and less, which has made life more fulfilling and enjoyable.”
“When I first sought help, my life was in a state of turmoil. Major depression and ADHD had taken a heavy toll on my daily functioning. I was constantly overwhelmed by a sense of despair and found it impossible to focus on even the simplest tasks. My mental health issues made keeping a job feel like an insurmountable challenge, and my personal relationships suffered as a result. It was a period marked by intense loneliness and confusion, with days blending into one another, leaving me with little memory of my actions or any hope for the future. Through countless therapy sessions, medication adjustments, and learning a variety of coping strategies, I gradually began to regain control over my life. I have been able to go back to school and manage the stress from studies and daily life. Life has become more fulfilling and enjoyable, filled with moments of genuine happiness and accomplishment.”
