Removing Barriers to Care: Why Mental Health Services Belong in Schools

Seven Counties Services School-Based Services Team Helps Students Inside and Outside the Classroom
Remember your school days? Besides learning about math, science, and reading, school was where you probably met your first best friend, participated in clubs or sports, worked through academic challenges, and spent most of your young life. As we continue to turn up the heat on academic achievement as the gateway to future success, students need mental health support more than ever and school is one of the best places for them to get it.
The Growing Need for Student Mental Health Support
Today’s students face a wide range of stressors that can affect their emotional well-being, including:
- Academic pressure
- Social challenges and peer relationships
- Bullying and cyberbullying
- Family transitions or instability
- Anxiety and depression
- Trauma and adverse life experiences
- Increased social media pressures
When students are struggling emotionally, they may have difficulty concentrating, completing assignments, managing behavior, attending school consistently, or maintaining healthy relationships. Even when parents recognize that their child may need support, obtaining services is not always easy. Common barriers include:
- Transportation Challenges – Many families struggle to coordinate travel to appointments, particularly when services are located far from home or work.
Time Constraints – Parents may need to take time off work, pull students out of school, or arrange childcare for siblings to attend appointments. - Financial Concerns – Families may worry about costs, insurance coverage, or other expenses associated with treatment.
- Stigma – Some families hesitate to seek care because of misconceptions surrounding mental health or concerns about being judged. These obstacles can prevent students from getting support until challenges become more severe.
How School-Based Services Makes Care Accessible
The Seven Counties Services School-Based Services Team reduces many of the barriers listed above by offering services in a familiar, convenient environment. When services are available at school, students can access support without requiring extensive travel or missing significant classroom time. Parents benefit from fewer scheduling challenges, and communication between mental health providers, educators, and families can be more seamless.
Most importantly, students often feel more comfortable receiving support in a place they already know and trust. Early intervention can improve emotional well-being, strengthen coping skills, and help students address challenges before they escalate.
